The oil of wintergreen is a world famous name, and it is extremely popular with the people suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, gout and pain in their bones and joints from any number of reasons. Wintergreen is incredibly powerful, so only use it with caution in small amounts.

Uses

Wintergreen oil is popular in salves, creams, and massage oils for occasional aches in muscles or joints. It can be used as a single essential oil in topical formulations or with other oils that have similar revitalising actions such as helichrysum, ginger, ravensara, or vetiver. Add to a roll-on bottle properly diluted in your favorite carrier oil to easily apply to specific areas.

After a run, hike, or long day on your feet use a blend of wintergreen, peppermint, and rosemary with your favorite carrier oils, butters, or added to unscented lotion.

Use in homemade cleansing sprays for yoga mats, gym bags with a few drops added to a base of water mixed with witch hazel, vinegar, or ethanol. Use wintergreen in the washing machine or to help freshen up sweaty work boots.

Exercise caution and be sure to dilute this oil at 2% or less in the total recipe before applying to skin.

Suggested Use

  • Baths: Add 5-10 drops of essential oil(s) to a warm running bath. If you have sensitive skin, blend the essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil first. Close the door so the vapours don’t escape. Soak for at least 10 minutes, relaxing and breathing deeply.
  • Massage: Use 5-6 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil. Mix thoroughly and apply liberally to the skin.
  • Inhalations: Add 4-5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water. Place a towel over your head, close your eyes and lean over the bowl. Inhale the vapour for a few minutes.
  • Burners and Diffusers: Fill the bowl of the burner or vaporiser with water and add 3-6 drops of essential oil. Light the candle and the oil will evaporate as the water heats up. Do not let the bowl dry out.
  • Blends well with frankincense, lemon, orange, rose, or patchouli.
