How to Use and Clean a Straining Cloth
To Use:
- Prep the cloth – Rinse the cloth in clean water and wring it out. This helps it stay in place and reduces absorption of your ingredients.
- Line your strainer or bowl – Drape the damp cloth over a sieve, colander, or bowl, ensuring it overhangs the sides.
- Pour in your mixture – Slowly pour your liquid (such as nut milk, broth, or cheese curds) into the cloth. The liquid will pass through, leaving solids behind.
- Strain and squeeze – Let gravity do the work or gently twist and squeeze the cloth to extract more liquid.
To Clean:
- Rinse immediately – Rinse the cloth under cold water right after use to remove most of the residue.
- Hand wash or machine wash – Wash with mild detergent in warm water. Avoid fabric softeners or bleach, which can leave residues.
- Air dry – Hang the cloth to air dry completely before storing to prevent mold or mildew.
- Optional boil – For a deeper clean, occasionally boil the cloth in water for 5–10 minutes to sanitize it.
