Lactic acid

From N$90.00

Lactic Acid is a gentle Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) naturally derived from fermented sugars. It is widely used in skincare for exfoliation, hydration, and improving overall skin texture. Compared to other AHAs such as glycolic acid, lactic acid has a larger molecular size, which allows it to work more gently on the skin’s surface while still delivering effective results.

In cosmetic formulations, lactic acid helps dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, encouraging smoother, brighter, and more even-looking skin. It also functions as a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to the skin, making it unique among exfoliating acids.

Lactic acid is commonly found in toners, serums, creams, peels, body lotions, and pH-adjusting formulations.

Benefits

Gentle Exfoliation

Lactic acid removes dead skin cells from the surface, helping to smooth rough texture and improve dull skin.

Brightens and Evens Skin Tone

Regular use may help reduce the appearance of dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven tone.

Hydrating Properties

Unlike many exfoliating acids, lactic acid also attracts moisture to the skin, helping maintain softness and hydration.

Improves Skin Texture

Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and rough patches by promoting cell turnover.

Supports Acne-Prone Skin

By preventing clogged pores, it may help reduce breakouts and improve overall clarity.

Enhances Product Absorption

Exfoliating the top layer of skin allows other skincare ingredients to penetrate more effectively.

Formulation Details

Lactic Acid is typically used at different concentrations depending on the product type:

  • 2% to 5% for mild daily exfoliating toners and lotions

  • 5% to 10% for stronger at-home exfoliating treatments

  • 10% to 30% for professional-level peels

It performs best at a pH between 3 and 4 for exfoliation. At higher pH levels, it functions more as a mild hydrator and pH adjuster rather than a strong exfoliant.

Lactic acid is water-soluble and should be added to the water phase during formulation. Proper pH testing is essential to ensure both safety and effectiveness.

How to Use

In a Skincare Routine

Apply a lactic acid serum or toner to clean, dry skin in the evening. Start using it two to three times per week and gradually increase frequency if tolerated. Follow with a hydrating moisturizer to support the skin barrier.

Because lactic acid increases skin sensitivity to sunlight, always apply sunscreen during the day while using products containing AHAs.

Body Use

Lactic acid is commonly used in body lotions to help smooth rough areas such as elbows, knees, and the backs of arms. It can improve the appearance of uneven texture with consistent use.

Avoid combining lactic acid in the same routine with strong retinoids or other exfoliating acids unless the skin is well adjusted.

Safety

Lactic acid is generally well tolerated, especially compared to stronger exfoliating acids. However, mild tingling, redness, or sensitivity may occur, particularly during initial use.

A patch test is recommended before first application. Do not apply to broken, irritated, or sunburned skin.

Daily sunscreen use is essential while using lactic acid products, as exfoliation makes skin more sensitive to UV exposure.

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a healthcare professional before using high-strength exfoliating products.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For external cosmetic use only.
