A straining cloth is a finely woven, breathable fabric used to filter liquids by trapping solid particles. It is commonly used in culinary applications such as making cheese, yogurt, nut milk, broths, and jams, as well as in herbal preparations and winemaking. How to Use and Clean a Straining Cloth

To Use:

  1. Prep the cloth – Rinse the cloth in clean water and wring it out. This helps it stay in place and reduces absorption of your ingredients.
  2. Line your strainer or bowl – Drape the damp cloth over a sieve, colander, or bowl, ensuring it overhangs the sides.
  3. Pour in your mixture – Slowly pour your liquid (such as nut milk, broth, or cheese curds) into the cloth. The liquid will pass through, leaving solids behind.
  4. Strain and squeeze – Let gravity do the work or gently twist and squeeze the cloth to extract more liquid.

To Clean:

  1. Rinse immediately – Rinse the cloth under cold water right after use to remove most of the residue.
  2. Hand wash or machine wash – Wash with mild detergent in warm water. Avoid fabric softeners or bleach, which can leave residues.
  3. Air dry – Hang the cloth to air dry completely before storing to prevent mold or mildew.
  4. Optional boil – For a deeper clean, occasionally boil the cloth in water for 5–10 minutes to sanitize it.

Proper care extends the life of your straining cloth and keeps it safe for repeated use.
